Acer Aspire R14 Review | Powerful, long-lasting and light

The Aspire R14 stands in a good place amongst the 2 in 1 hybrid model laptops. Especially with its battery life and flexible design, the Aspire R14 offers a great performance with an external processor and SSD support. Meanwhile, the sound quality of the laptop is quite successful; Let’s not skip this detail either. The missing side of the Aspire R14 is that it does not have a sufficient level of brightness as we have just said and that the keys on the keyboard are very close to each other that makes typing extremely painful. But overall, it’s a great 2 in 1 laptop that costs less than its alternatives.

Who should buy?

Those who are looking for a hybrid laptop with a foldable design may want to choose the Aspire R14, which we like best.

Yet another 2 in 1 laptop from Acer; Aspire R14

With the new year, technology giants have begun releasing their new computer models to the public. Among those, there are quite a lot of hybrid models as well as standard laptop models. As you know, we recently published our review of Acer Swift 7 which can be considered as a similar model. Today we are reviewing the Aspire R14 from Acer’s Aspire R family. This model is especially interesting with its long battery life, high comfort, and successful performance.

Foldable and elegant design

The Aspire R14 is a 14-inch hybrid model. The biggest demonstration of being a hybrid model is its foldable structure. The screen can be folded back 360 degrees so you can use the device either as a laptop or as a tablet. Also, like other models in this category, it can be used easily in a tent and stand forms.

As far as design is concerned, we can easily say that the Aspire R14 can be considered between elegant and fashionable models. The Aspire R14 is a combination of metallic aluminum, plastic, and rubber. and it has a gray color option.

The aspire R14, which uses a brushed aluminum layer on the lid and inside, features a plastic material on the edge of the screen. The bottom of the laptop is made of rubber. The materials used make Aspire R14 one of the thinnest and lightest laptops available. The laptop, which is about 18 mm thick, weighs 1.9 kilograms. Of course it’s not as thin as the Swift 7, but still one of the thinnest laptops.

Although the design of the keyboard on the Aspire R14 looks good, it did not deliver the high user performance and experience that we expected in the first place. That’s because the keys are too close to each other. Of course, you will get used to it over time. It also could have been better that if the keys would slightly be higher than the floor. Let’s also say that the keyboard has LED backlighting and we do not encounter any troubles on the touchpad, it responses great and doesn’t hurt your fingertips over time.

Among the connection ports around the Aspire R14, the USB Type-C port is remarkable. The device also features two USB 3.0 ports and a USB 2.0 port. Besides HDMI, card reader and a headphone jack, an Ethernet port can also be connected to your Aspire R14 via a USB adapter.

14 Inch Ultra Sensitive Touch Screen

The Aspire R14 offers a wide range of models and each model has its own unique configuration. In the model we have reviewed, the 14 inch size screen transmits Full HD 1080p.

The Aspire R14’s screen is made of TFT LCD panels. The LED backlight display is of course touch screen and it is quite sensitive and you do not have to touch it twice to do something. The only flaw of the screen is that, the brightness level is rather low. If you are going to use it in outdoor and under the sun you probably will not see anything.

Technical infrastructure

As we have previously stated, the Aspire R14 has different model and configuration options. In our model we had an Intel Core i5-6200U processor. We had previously encountered the Yoga 500 with this dual core processor. For this reason, both devices deliver close results in terms of performance. However, this model of Aspire R14 does not have Nvidia support. Instead, one of the Acer’s local graphics unit Intel HD Graphics 520 is used. For this reason, although I can see that two laptops are close to each other in processing performance, the Yoga 500’s graphics performance is one step ahead of the Aspire R14. Nevertheless, you can play MMO games like World of Warcraft with the Aspire R14 and get 30 FPS graphics performance at 1366×768 resolution.

The processor used in the Aspire R14 is 2.3 GHz base, working at 2.8 GHz ceiling frequencies. There is a processor with 4 GB of memory and a 128 GB SSD in the storage area. Aspire R14, behind SSD performance, powered by all this powerful hardware, what kind of battery duration do you think it has?
Obviously, our most favorite feature is Aspire R14’s powerful battery. In spite of the strong hardware it has, the battery will not let you down when you need your PC most. These types of products need to be particularly ambitious about battery life, but some of the models disappoint us in this sense. Fortunately, the Aspire R14 is not one of them, and it provides us with a long working time. We can say that the battery performance we had in the Aspire R14 is about 8 and a half hours.
